AED inspection is a critical on-going task to ensure the effective use of the device during a sudden cardiac arrest event. Manual AED inspections are an overwhelming amount of work, especially in large facilities/campuses. Being overloaded with spreadsheets and physical checklists could lead to errors which could have deadly consequences in a cardiac emergency. What Is Involved in a Manual AED Inspection
An AED inspection should occur at least monthly and include the date, condition of the AED, confirmation that the battery is in working condition, checking the expiration dates of any AED pads, checking AED patches for expiration dates, and checking any damaged packaging.
Problems with Manual Inspection
As with all things, human error can occur and, in the case of an AED, this can be deadly. Inspections could be logged to wrong serial numbers, employee turn over could lead to months without the AED being maintained, etc.
According to an article published by the New York Times, the Food and Drug Administration states that there are about 2.4 million AEDs hanging on walls and mounted in protective cases in public places across the US. AEDs are expected to last 5-10 years and most are never used.
Problems can occur during rescue attempts and these can contribute to patient harm or death.
Problems that can occur—especially after years of nonuse, include:
Electrodes drying out if not maintained and regularly replaced
Issues with battery management or recharging
Damaged cables or connectors
Problems arising from humid conditions
From 2005-2012 there were 45,000 reports of the devices failing and some of these were due to improper maintenance.
